Pollution Today

Air quality in the United States has largely improved over the past thirty years through the implementation of the "Clean Air Act" in 1970. However, there are remaining concerns regarding the ozone and particulate matter concentrations in urban areas. Studies have shown that premature death and extreme health impacts to children occur in several cities throughout the United States (please see our statement for references).

In addition, the current Bush Administration is proposing a revision of the guidelines put forward by the Clean Air Act through the "Clear Skies" initiative. Often called the "dirty skies" initiative by critics, Clear Skies loosens the restrictions placed on industries regarding emission regulations and permitted pollution levels in the atmosphere.
