Pigeons

Our pigeons belong to pigeon fanciers in the California region. They are racing pigeons and have been trained to fly long distances at high speed and to come home reliably. We have trained a few selected birds to comfortably carry our pollution sensing pigeonbackpack. Speed is not a concern for us.

Embedded Reporters

The embedded reporters are pigeons carrying a small cellphone camera and a microphone as opposed to a pollution sensors. They will be sent along with the pollution sensing birds to send reports during flight time. Photos will be send to the blog and humans will be able to call the pigeons to listen to the audio at any given point in time. Unfortunately the research team has fallen behind the development of those devices and the initial pigeon releases will take place without the embedded reporter pigeons. Starting in 2007, our reporters will be sent along with the other pigeons.

Humans

Current human participants and contributers to Pigeonblog include: Beatriz da Costa (artist, researcher), Richard Desroisiers (pigeon owner), Rufus Edwards (scientific consultant), Cina Hazegh (artist, researcher), Kevin Ponto (artist, researcher), Bob Matsuyama (pigeon owner), Robert Nideffer (copy editor), Peter Osterholm (pigeon owner), Jamie Schulte (electronics consultant and dear friend), Ward Smith (videographer).
